CBR: Disabled people's organisations
Disabled
people's organisations (DPOs)
are important for both networking and awareness raising at local level.
Each Divisional Secretary division (local
government)
has one such DPO which meets one in three months to discuss and address
issues related to disabled people’s needs in order to bring them to the
notice of government authorities or other developmental agencies
working in the area.
Navajeevana has been instrumental in establishing DPOs across the
Hambantota and Matara districts in Sri Lanka. These DPOs are an
important aspect of Sri Lankan civil society, in which people with
disabilities have an outlet for their views and concerns. Navajeevana
believes that these outlets are essential for achieving the rights of
people with disabilities.
