Institutional Based Rehabilitation (IBR)
The majority of
Navajeevana’s clients
visiting the centre suffer from physical disabilities caused by
neurological problems, accidents, stroke, cerebral palsy and hearing
impairment.
Our dedicated institutional based rehabilitation (IBR)
department
caters to these clients; providing necessary services to back up
community based rehabilitation efforts. The IBR department is broadly
divided into units that deal with therapy offering physiotherapy,
occupational therapy, speech therapy and counselling, and production –
producing mobility aides (wheelchairs, crutches) special seating and
prosthetic and orthotic devices.
Prosthetics and Orthotics
With highly trained staff, this department
manufactures a
number of aides
for children and adults with different types of structural deformities.
Clients are referred to this department by field volunteers or by
hospitals in the area. Artificial limbs, structural supports and
correctional shoes are manufactured here using imported raw material
and financial support from Motivation enables Navajeevana to give these
aides to clients at 20% of the actual cost.

Physiotherapy
This unit sees
a daily average of twenty patients. On the first visit an assessment is
made and a treatment plan is detailed. At times this could entail twice
weekly visits to the unit. Treatment can begin when the patient is just
a few days old. The unit sees both children and adults with problems
ranging from back pain to cerebral palsy.

Supportive
Seating
The special seating unit caters to clients, usually
children, who need
specifically designed seating support. We work with the client
and their parent or carer to ensure that the seat caters exactly to
their needs. This unit has a long waiting list of clients in need
of our help.

seating factsheet
Speech
and Language Therapy
Navajeevana has provided comprehensive speech and language therapy both
in the field and at the centre since 2000. Our trained therapist
is the only one serving the Hambantota district of southern Sri Lanka
and works with over 500 clients each year, both at the centre in
Tangalla and through outreach clinics.

The
Audiological Unit
The audiological unit was one of the first therapy units of
Navajeevana. It has the proud reputation of being the only one of its
kind in the southern area and many patients are referred here from
government hospitals and private clinics. The unit provides audio
testing, quality rehabilitation of speech and language skills and
audiological aides such as ear moulds
