Night bazaar held at Navajeevana

 27 April 2009

Navajeevana's Chairperson Kumarini Wickramasuriya reports on the night bazaar recently held at Navajeevana to raise awareness of the work and services of the organsation:

"It was an encouraging experience I wish to share with all who have been with us in different ways and situations through our 22 years.

The year 2009 is the most challenging year in our history. The need for our services has reached a new high and compared to the past few years the budget available to us is less than 50 percent. We are more than grateful for this when compared with some service providers have closed up already.

What did we do? The staff and some of our beneficiaries immediately bounced back into action with a slight push from the “top”.

Within one week a "Night Bazaar" was organized  at Navajeevana. It was a new experience for the community. Expenses were kept to a minimum. Telephone appeals for contributions were made from shop owners, business establishments and those whom Navajeevana supported after tsunami - vegetables stalls in the market, friends and relations also contributed.

Some items were auctioned and others sold at reasonable prices. Snack dinners were available vegetable soup, Chinese rolls, roti and fresh fried fish from the beneficiaries of Kudawella, the fishing village that Navajeevana rehabilitated after tsunami.

A very attractive camp fire was arranged by girl guides, a "queen of the night" was chosen and awarded, a treasure hunt for the children and lots of singing and dancing around the camp fire capped it all.

What was the lesson learnt? We wanted to make our funders realize that it is our turn to make the most effort to see through these challenging years in doing our best to continue the work supported by them  and also to assist the organisation with its work in the future contributing to the joint effort and responsibility to encourage the local community to support Navajeevana.

Keep it up, and we will surely make it through these hard times!"
